Comment here if you have a book, short story, collection of short stories, or other work of fiction--and we'll consider nonfiction here too--to recommend for the book club.
I want to recommend this book, but maybe not for the Book Club, just for private reading: The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle. If someone wants to borrow it, let me know.
I think that we should read a modern japanese author, to see the difference in style... but I'm still thinking of options. There is a book called "In the pool", by Okuda, that is modern and extremely funny, but I don't think it's in English yet...
In the meantime, some people mentioned: The Golden pavilion, by Mishima Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden
I don't recognize Souseki or Mishima. You mentioned Geisha as a bit too stereotypical, so I'm more tempted by the other two. I enjoy funny or perhaps amusing literature most, so I'm bummed about Okuda's current unavailability. To vote on a whim, I am a cat sounds good.
The Old Capital (古都) by Yasunari Kawabata. Any takers?

What about "I am a cat", by Natsume Souseki?

ReplyDeleteA new suggestion: Manga!
